Streater Odom Spencer, born in the Mississippi Delta, graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in Marketing. Although essentially self-taught, she studied under Ben Shute, cofounder of the Atlanta College of Art. When her first paintings from that original period of her work sold quickly in Atlanta galleries, her career took off on its own.
Streater's popularity grew tremendously in Nashville and throughout the southeast where she has been Featured Artist in numerous art shows and exhibitions. After a working trip to Tuscany, her more relaxed style was received with great enthusiasm. Her “sgraffito” technique of removing paint layers creates a visually striking and textured effect. The raw surfaces and textured layers provide a tangible connection to the artist’s process. These paintings evoke a sense of spontaneity, energy, movement and spirit. Streater’s works embrace the element of chance and imperfection and encourage her viewer to see the art more intimately.
Artist's Statement:
" I hope to invite the viewer into the painting through the use of warm color, atmosphere and texture. I've found that my most admired paintings are created when I simply paint what's exciting to me. It seems there's a common attraction to colorful movement."
